
Mac was transported to Dunedin hospital ICU then transferred to Starship ICU in Auckland two days later, where he stayed for six weeks followed by another eight weeks of intensive rehabilitation at the Wilson Centre on the North Shore before he was able to come home.
 
A year after the accident Mac met the rescue helicopter paramedics who saved his life.
Mac has left sided hand and leg difficulties because of the accident, and he is now a para-athlete who recently represented NZ at the Australia National Athletics Championships, achieving a bronze medal in discus. Mac’s achievements were recognised when he was selected as a finalist in this year’s Central Otago Sports Awards.
