About the Trust

The Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust was formed in 1998 to establish and fund a dedicated intensive care rescue helicopter service for the greater Otago area. Forty two Otago businesses, Community Trusts, Councils and the public contributed to establish the Trust and launch the Otago Rescue Helicopter.

The Trust funded the roof-top helipad on Dunedin Hospital and gifted it to the Hospital The helipad has direct stretcher access from the roof to hospital lifts and emergency services.

When the Rescue Helicopter flies on a rescue mission it receives an hourly rate from the agency that initiates the call eg ACC for accidents, Hospitals for inter-hospital transfers & Police for search and rescue missions.

These payments cover the helicopter flying costs of the mission and make a contribution to the fixed costs of leasing the helicopter, salaries for the pilots and paramedics and safety training.    The Trust has the ongoing challenge of raising approx $400,000 to $500,000 per year to cover the unfunded fixed costs of providing the service and to update the emergency and life support equipment carried on the helicopter.
